Who we are

About Battery4Life

Battery4Life is a competence center based in Graz, Austria, focused on advancing safe, reliable, and sustainable battery technologies. We work across the entire battery life cycle: from development and testing to operation and reuse, to prevent and mitigate critical situations. By combining scientific expertise with practical industry experience, we develop innovative methods and solutions that extend battery lifetime, reduce risks, and support the energy systems of the future.

What we do

Our mission

We research safe and sustainable batteries across their entire life cycle. Our work includes optimizing new battery concepts, understanding degradation mechanisms, and detecting risks at an early stage. Through virtual development, accelerated aging tests, and innovative monitoring solutions, we shorten the time to application and extend battery lifetime. This provides the foundation for greater safety, efficiency, and sustainability in a wide range of battery applications.

Competence Center (COMET)

At Battery4Life, we develop solutions to make batteries safer, longer-lasting, and more sustainable. Using innovative concepts, advanced testing methods, and virtual models, we study energy storage systems across their entire life cycle, from development to reuse. In doing so, we create knowledge and technologies that not only meet today’s requirements but also ensure a secure energy supply for the future.

Prediction and Optimization

We develop innovative battery concepts with a strong focus on virtual methods such as numerical simulations and real-time models. This enables us to identify safety risks at an early stage, make testing more efficient, and accelerate the market readiness of new technologies. With this approach, we contribute to greater safety, sustainability, and efficiency in battery technology.

Degradation Mechanisms

We investigate how aging processes affect battery safety, for example through altered stress limits or the propagation of damage. Using detailed analyses and accelerated aging tests, we develop methods to detect risks early and realistically account for lifetime in evaluations. This reduces testing efforts and supports reliable strategies for safe and long-term operation.

Monitoring and Failure Prediction

We monitor and analyze battery conditions using advanced non-destructive methods, both online and offline, to ensure safety and reliability. Our research also addresses second-life and re-use scenarios through cell classification and in-use safety analyses. In this way, we improve safety and extend battery lifetime by detecting potential risks at an early stage.

Shaping the Future of Battery Technology: safe, efficient, and sustainable

Our research at Battery4Life focuses on making batteries safer, longer-lasting, and more sustainable. We work on prediction and optimization to identify risks at an early stage and shorten development times. In degradation research, we analyze aging processes to reduce testing needs and extend lifetime. With monitoring and failure prediction, we create systems that continuously assess battery health and enable predictive maintenance.
